I recently reviewed several of these sort of walker-assistant items. After a great deal of consideration, I decided to buy a lesser-known and much more affordable product called the MoonWalker. I got mine on eBay and it had to be shipped from Hong Kong but I paid less than $6.00 total with shipping for my item. It arrived in about a week and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!
It's not the prettiest (blue and yellow/orange) but it works really well. It has a stiff handle the goes above the baby's head for the parent to hold onto either one handed or two handed. It really helps my tall husband (6'3") to assist our 30" tall daughter with walking, without it killing his back as it had been before. The design of the MoonWalker also allows you to regulate the amount of assistance you are actually providing so that over time, you are really giving no help at all but the baby thinks you are doing all the work. Another nice thing about this is that it keeps your little one's hands and arms in a more natural position than when holding onto their hands, which keeps their arms upright. Another great advantage to using this sort of device is that you can help avert any disasters, falls, etc., and it allows you to easily steer your child in whatever direction you want. It has also proven to be helpful when my daughter wants to go up the stairs.... she's able to do the leg work while we make sure she doesn't fall.
The design of the MoonWalker is such that has a long (about a foot to maybe 15" long) handle that extends above baby's head. There are 4 straps that extend from the handle down to the crotch-style harness (2 straps at either end of the handle). Two of the straps are designed to go in front of baby and 2 in back. My daughter has found that she likes to hold onto the two front straps while walking and sometimes she ends up with one or both of the straps behind her (so all 4 of the straps are to her back). This doesn't cause any problems with the effectiveness of the product but my husband was walking with her while all 4 straps were to her back and she started to lose her balance and fall forward. At that time he was able to see that if all 4 straps are to her back and she falls forward, it's more difficult to catch her before she falls. So keep that in mind - try to have at least one of the straps, or preferably both, in front of your baby.
The actual construction of the MoonWalker is pretty nice. I checked all the stitching and there were no areas of concern. The harness portion that actually comes into contact with your baby is nicely padded, yet very flexible at the same time.
The only drawback I can think of about the MoonWalker is washing it... with the metal handle bar (wrapped in fabric), I can see washing it being a bit of a hassle because the handle is not detatchable. SO I plan on just trying to keep it really clean and spot-cleaning at the first signs of needing it.
Just to save you some time in searching, I purchased mine from eBay seller bbcbuy88 and the title of the item was "NEW Baby Toddler Harness Walk Learning Assistant Walker". This was the best deal I found at the time (July of 2010) and the total was $5.60 (including shipping).
